But if someone asks, “Can you manage that?” they want to know, “Can you do it, are you able to handle it?” Both meanings apply to this series on “Managing the future.” Some of us are managers in our companies and departments, but all of us have to manage ourselves, our work and our relationships as we move into the futures.Managing ourselves and others is a big challenge today. The situation and the rules are changing. Warren Bennis has suggested that people today don’t want to be “managed,” in the old sense of being “instructed,” “directed,” or “told what to do.” Instead, he says, people want to be “led”. They want strong leadership that can call forth the best they have to give. Perhaps we need to learn how to manage ourselves and lead others.
